This is your chance to join us for a trail work project and give back to the Idaho trails you love!

Since 2010, we have taught crews of volunteers how to maintain trails and have led nearly 200 trips. Many of our projects have gone on for several consecutive years, allowing us to make a real impact on some of Idaho’s favorite hiking destinations.

By signing up to volunteer with ITA, you are helping to support public lands and preserve Idaho trails for the next generation. Our trips are a great way to meet people and enjoy the outdoors at the same time!

You do not need to have any experience to sign up for a project. We will give you the training and tools you need to do the work. Click here for the Frequently Asked Questions about our projects.

Whether you are looking for an easy one-day project, a weekend getaway, or a week-long work vacation, you are sure to find a project that is right for you. Our projects range in difficulty from easy to very strenuous. See project rating scale below.

Some of our longer projects require volunteers to pay a deposit in order to join the trip. We’ve had trouble with people backing out of trips at the last minute and this can really affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable fee, people are less likely to cancel their reservation. This fee is refundable to all volunteers that come on the trip. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel less than a month out from the start of the project. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho.

In response to COVID-19, we are asking everyone who signs up for a project to take this questionnaire to determine if it is safe to join. Please see also our volunteer guidelines for staying safe during trail work projects.

Project rating scale:

1 – Easy: Trail work is performed near or a short distance from a trailhead. Work is typically performed with a larger group. Minimal gear may be carried.

2 – Moderate: Day trip trail work is performed a small to medium distance from a trailhead. Volunteers (up to a dozen) will carry a daypack and tools.

3 – Difficult: Hike medium to long distances from a trailhead – these are overnight backpacking trips. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance may/may not be available.

4 – Very Strenuous: Hike medium to long distances often uphill from a trailhead – these are overnight backpacking trips. Support of an outfitter or pack assistance may/may not be available.
