Project Description

The West Fork and Hidden Lakes Trail System accesses one of the most beautiful and rugged portions of the Idaho Selkirk Mountains. Come join us, Saturday, August 10th, through Monday, August 12th, to assist in the maintenance of Trail 21, between West Fork Cabin and Hidden Lake. If you would like to extend your time you may work additional days and come out anytime on or before Aug 18th. Sections of the trail need to be realigned to avoid sensitive wildlife habitats and wet meadows. Work will also include trail brushing and “day lighting” to improve clearance and reduce the potential for human-wildlife encounters.

We’ll be joined by a couple of Forest Service crew leaders and camp on the ridge above Hidden Lake. Food will be provided each day to participating volunteers. There will also be some time for leisure so that volunteers can explore the area’s spectacular beauty while hiking with fellow volunteers. Attractions include West Fork Cabin, which is a reconstructed smoke-jumpers cabin that is worth a visit. There is also a historic lookout perched on top of West Work Mountain, where views of the Selkirk Crest and Priest Lake may be seen.

From Bonners Ferry, head north on U.S. Highway 95 for approximately 15 miles, and bear left onto U.S. Highway 1. Drive one mile, and turn left toward Copeland. Drive approximately 5 miles, crossing the bridge over the Kootenai River, until you reach the West Side Road and turn right. After 9 miles, the paved road bends to the left, becoming Smith Creek Road 281. Keeping following Smith Creek Road 281, and bear left at the junction with Road 655, between mileposts 7 and 8. Continue another 3 miles on Road 281, and then bear right on road 2446. Follow the road a little over a mile until you reach the trailhead.
